8 Best Smart Locks for Airbnb in 2026 (With Automatic Guest Codes)
For most US and Canadian hosts the safest pick is a Wi-Fi keypad lock from Yale or Schlage, because Airbnb itself creates a unique code for every booking on those brands. If your Wi-Fi is weak, igloohome's offline PINs are the strongest alternative. We found eight locks with documented automatic guest-code paths, not ten.

Facts last verified October 19, 2026. Evaluated from official documentation and public sources; not hands-on tested.

Key takeaways
- Airbnb natively issues per-booking codes only for Schlage, August and Yale Wi-Fi locks, and only for listings in the US and Canada.
- Every other brand here needs a PMS or the maker's own Airbnb connector to create codes automatically.
- Wi-Fi is the weak point. igloohome's offline PINs are the main hedge for rentals with poor signal at the door.
- Airbnb only passes one lock's code per listing through a PMS, so a gate code or a second door needs another plan.
- We could not honestly reach ten locks, so the list is eight.
Quick recommendations
Best overall for US/Canada hosts
Airbnb lists it natively, and Hospitable, Hostaway and Guesty all list Yale.
Best for Apple Home users
Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt
Native Airbnb support plus Matter and Apple Home Key per Schlage.
Best for weak Wi-Fi
Generates PINs offline and syncs with Airbnb through the maker's connector.
Best for keeping your existing deadbolt
Retrofit lock with Wi-Fi built in; needs a keypad for codes.
Best when you cannot change the lock
A lockbox with time-limited PINs listed by Hospitable.
The best smart lock for most Airbnb hosts in the US and Canada is a Wi-Fi keypad deadbolt from Yale or Schlage, because Airbnb itself generates a unique code for each booking on those brands and delivers it to the guest. If your door has poor Wi-Fi, igloohome's offline PIN approach is the strongest alternative. Everything else here works only through a property management system (PMS) or the lock maker's own Airbnb connector.
This guide is based on vendor documentation, Airbnb's help center and PMS support pages, checked on 2026-10-19. We have not hands-on tested these locks. We list eight rather than ten, because eight is as many as we could tie to a documented, automatic per-reservation code path.
How automatic guest codes actually work
There are three routes, and they matter more than the lock's feature list.
1. Airbnb's native integration. Airbnb connects directly to compatible Schlage, August and Yale locks. It generates unique codes that are valid only for the booking, sends them to guests with trip details, and deactivates them at checkout. If you approve an early check-in or late checkout, the code adjusts. You are notified in the Airbnb app when guests check in, and when a lock is offline or has low batteries. Airbnb says it cannot see the codes on your lock and will not change personal codes you added. The feature is available only for listings in the US and Canada.
2. A PMS. If you use a PMS with a lock integration, the PMS generates the code and Airbnb delivers it. Airbnb states the limits plainly: it cannot see battery or connectivity status, it cannot change codes, and it can share only one lock's code per listing. You must also provide backup entry instructions. See our guide to PMS platforms and the Hospitable, Hostaway and Guesty pages.
3. The lock maker's own connector. igloohome, for example, links to your Airbnb account through its app and emails a PIN to the guest for each booking.
Our read: the native route is the least fragile if you only have one or two listings. A PMS makes sense once you also need messaging, calendars and cleaning workflows.

The 8 best smart locks for Airbnb
1. Yale Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi: best overall for US and Canadian hosts
Airbnb lists the Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi, in standard, Touch and Plus variants, as a native integration, and Hospitable lists the YRD410-WF1 and YRD430-WF1 Wi-Fi models along with Z-Wave and Bluetooth versions. Hostaway and Guesty both list Yale as well. That spread of support is the reason we would pick it first.
Yale's launch material describes interchangeable modules: Wi-Fi, Z-Wave and a Matter module, with Wi-Fi modules also working with the original Assure locks. Yale also says 5 GHz Wi-Fi is available only on Assure Lock 2 models with the Wi-Fi module.
Pros
- Native Airbnb support in the US and Canada, and broad PMS support.
- Module-based connectivity gives you options.
Cons
- Only the Wi-Fi variants work with Airbnb's integration. A Bluetooth-only Assure Lock 2 will not.
- We could not fetch Yale's current product page, so confirm pricing and bundle contents with the vendor.
2. Schlage Encode Plus: best for Apple Home users
Airbnb lists the Encode Plus, Encode (deadbolt and lever) and Sense Pro. Schlage's page shows built-in Wi-Fi, Matter certification, Thread support, and Apple Home Key. Schlage listed it as "starting from $329.00" against a $399 MSRP on 2026-10-19.
Pros
- Native Airbnb support, no hub.
- Matter and Home Key, useful if you also run an Apple Home setup.
Cons
- Priced higher than most competitors.
3. Schlage Encode: best value Airbnb-native Schlage
The Encode keeps the Wi-Fi keypad and the Airbnb and Hospitable support, using standard AA batteries. Schlage's site listed it as "starting at $299.00" on 2026-10-19. We did not compare it feature by feature with the Plus; if the price gap is small at your retailer, the Plus is the simpler recommendation.
Pros
- Same ecosystem as the Plus for less money.
Cons
- Fewer headline features, per Schlage's range structure.
4. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock plus keypad: best for keeping your existing deadbolt
August's lock mounts over your current deadbolt, so your keys still work. Wi-Fi is built in. Airbnb lists the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock plus keypad; Hospitable notes a keypad accessory is required. August's page showed the lock at $199.99 during a fall sale and the Yale Keypad Touch at $119.99, and quoted battery life of up to three months, which is short. Plan your battery swaps.
Pros
- No bridge, no door replacement.
Cons
- Needs a separate keypad for codes.
- Frequent battery changes if you believe the quoted three months.
5. Kwikset Halo Touchscreen: best hub-free touchscreen option through Hospitable
Hospitable lists the Halo family (Halo Keypad, Halo Touch and Halo Touchscreen) under its Kwikset connection. Airbnb does not list Kwikset natively, so you need Hospitable or another PMS. Hospitable notes Kwikset codes are provisioned three days before check-in. Kwikset's materials describe Wi-Fi with no hub and up to 250 user codes, with a $229 MSRP reported for the touchscreen model; retailer listings we saw ranged from $199 to $269.
Pros
- Wi-Fi built in, no hub.
Cons
- Requires a PMS.
- We could not read Kwikset's current product page.
6. igloohome Deadbolt 2S: best for weak Wi-Fi
igloohome's algoPIN technology generates PINs that work without Wi-Fi at the lock, which is its whole point. igloohome says its Airbnb Connect creates a unique PIN per booking and emails it to the guest, by default one hour before check-in, then deactivates it at checkout. The Deadbolt 2S runs on four AA batteries for about a year per igloohome, with a 9V emergency jumpstart. It is compatible only with wooden swing doors 35 to 60 mm thick.
With a PMS the picture changes. Hospitable lists the Deadbolt 2S (IGB4) as requiring the igloohome Bridge within about 7 m, and does not support the IGB402 variant. Hostaway also lists igloohome.
Pros
- Works when the internet does not.
- Direct Airbnb connector, no PMS required.
Cons
- Wooden doors only.
- Remote management and logs need the optional Bridge.
7. igloohome Smart Keybox 3E: best when you cannot change the lock
If the building controls the door, a lockbox is the pragmatic answer. igloohome describes lockboxes with time-limited PINs. Hospitable lists the Keybox 3E with the Bridge within about 4 m. The weakness is the physical key: guests can walk off with it. We could not read the 3E's product page, so check specifications with igloohome.
Pros
- No change to the door.
Cons
- A human has to deal with lost or kept keys.
8. Nuki Smart Lock Pro with keypad: best for European rentals
Hostaway and Hospitable both list Nuki, and Nuki says a keypad linked to Airbnb gives guests an individual six-digit code valid for the booking. Hospitable lists the Nuki Smart Lock 4.0 Pro (Wi-Fi) and 5th Gen Pro with a keypad via the Smart Hosting subscription, and notes Nuki codes cannot start with 12 or contain a 0. Nuki's page offers a 30-day free trial of Smart Hosting but does not show a price. We found a reported US Smart Hosting price of $5.90 per month only in a search snippet, so treat US availability and pricing as unverified.
Pros
- Retrofit install.
- Listed by two PMSs.
Cons
- Subscription needed.
- US availability not confirmed.
Locks we left out
Level, Lockly and Ultraloq are popular. We did not recommend them because we could not confirm a documented, automatic per-reservation code path through Airbnb or the PMSs we checked. Hospitable does list one Lockly deadbolt and a fingerprint model through the SmartThings route, which uses a hub such as the Aeotec Smart Home Hub, but that route has its own timing constraint noted in Hospitable's documentation. If your lock is not on the lists above, check the PMS's current lock page before buying.
Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Bluetooth and Matter: what matters
- Wi-Fi locks are the simplest and what Airbnb's native integration requires. The signal at the door is the constraint, not at the router.
- Z-Wave and Zigbee locks need a hub. Hospitable supports many through SmartThings.
- Bluetooth-only locks need a bridge for remote code changes.
- Matter is useful for home-ecosystem control, but none of the automatic-code paths we checked depends on it.
Setup steps
- Decide your route: native Airbnb, a PMS, or the lock maker's connector.
- Confirm your exact model number against the list on Airbnb's or your PMS's page. Variants matter.
- Install the lock, test Wi-Fi at the door, and link it in the lock's app.
- Connect it to Airbnb or your PMS. In Hospitable, codes by default activate at check-in and deactivate at checkout, with buffers you can set.
- Add backup entry instructions, as Airbnb requires for PMS codes.
- Run a test booking, and check the code arrives and works.
What still needs a human
- Battery changes, and checking low-battery alerts.
- Responding to a guest who cannot get in.
- Lock jams, lost keys, and door hardware repairs.
- Re-keying after a physical key is not returned.
Common mistakes
- Buying a Bluetooth-only variant of a Wi-Fi-listed lock.
- Forgetting that only one lock's code goes to Airbnb per listing.
- Skipping a backup entry method.
- Ignoring local rules for handling guest data and access logs.

How the PMS routes differ
If you take the PMS route, the behaviour differs enough to affect your choice. These details come from each vendor's documentation as of 2026-10-19.
| Hospitable | Hostaway | Guesty | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lock brands named | Schlage, Yale, August, Kwikset, igloohome, Nuki, TTLock-compatible, KeyNest and others | Schlage, Yale, August, igloohome, RemoteLock, Nuki, plus marketplace options | Over 40 providers, including Yale and Salto |
| Code creation | Unique code per accepted reservation, random or phone-based | Unique code per confirmed booking, time-limited | Automatic for confirmed reservations with future check-ins |
| Default timing | Active from check-in to checkout, buffers adjustable | Time-limited to reservation dates | Active from estimated arrival to estimated departure, four digits |
| Notable limits | Lock-specific rules, such as Nuki and Kwikset | Depends on connectivity and battery | One code is valid for all locks at a property |
Two practical points follow. First, the PMS you use may restrict which model numbers work, so verify the exact variant, not just the brand. Second, RemoteLock is no longer available to new Hospitable accounts as of March 25, 2024, so do not plan a new build around it there. Read the Hospitable, Hostaway and Guesty pages for the wider platform picture.
How to choose
Match the lock to your constraints rather than to a feature list.
- Which country are you in? Airbnb's native integration covers US and Canadian listings only. Elsewhere you need a PMS or a maker's connector.
- How strong is Wi-Fi at the door? If it is weak, favour igloohome's offline PINs, or add a Wi-Fi extender before buying a Wi-Fi lock.
- Can you replace the door hardware? If not, use the August retrofit lock or a lockbox.
- Do you already use a PMS? If so, start from its supported list and work backward.
- How often can you change batteries? August quotes up to three months; igloohome quotes about a year for the Deadbolt 2S. Both are vendor figures.
- How many locks per listing? Airbnb passes only one lock's code per listing via a PMS. A building entrance plus a unit door needs a plan, such as a separate lockbox or a PMS-sent message.
Pricing and portfolio fit
Prices we saw on 2026-10-19: Schlage Encode Plus from $329 (MSRP $399), Schlage Encode from $299, August Wi-Fi Smart Lock at $199.99 during a sale with the Yale Keypad Touch at $119.99, and Kwikset's Halo touchscreen around $199 to $269 at retailers. We did not see current prices for Yale, igloohome or Nuki locks. Sale prices change often, so use these only as a range.
For one to three listings, the native Airbnb route with a Yale or Schlage lock is usually enough. For four or more, or if you also want automated messaging and cleaning, a PMS starts to pay for itself, and then your lock choice follows the PMS list.
Security and guest-privacy points
- Use unique, expiring codes for guests. Do not reuse a permanent code.
- Airbnb says it cannot see the codes on your lock when you use the native integration.
- Keep your own cleaner and co-host codes separate, and remove them when people leave.
- Review access logs only as your listing terms and local law allow.
- Offline PINs help during an outage, but you still need a way to revoke access.

Frequently asked questions
›Which smart locks work directly with Airbnb?
Airbnb lists Schlage, August and Yale Wi-Fi locks as native integrations, for listings in the US and Canada. The listed models include the Schlage Encode and Encode Plus, the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock with a keypad, and the Yale Assure Lock and Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi.
›Do I need a property management system for guest codes?
Not if you use one of the native brands in the US or Canada. For anything else, such as Kwikset or Nuki, or for listings outside those countries, you need a PMS with a lock integration, or the lock maker's own connector like igloohome's Airbnb Connect.
›What happens if the lock loses Wi-Fi or the batteries die?
Guests cannot receive new codes remotely, and a dead battery can leave them locked out. Airbnb requires backup entry instructions when you share PMS codes, and Hostaway's own guidance flags connectivity and battery as the main risk. Keep a physical key or a separate lockbox, and set a battery-replacement schedule.
›Can I give my cleaner a separate code?
Yes. Airbnb says hosts can keep managing personal codes in the lock's own app, and that it will never change them. Hospitable also supports custom codes for cleaners, co-hosts or maintenance.
›Are smart locks worth it for one listing?
If you are tired of key handoffs, yes, and the native Airbnb route needs no extra software. The cost is mainly the lock itself plus a backup plan. Our read is that a single listing does not need a PMS just for codes in the US or Canada.

Automating check-in takes three pieces: a smart lock that can hold a unique code per booking, a system that creates and delivers that code, and a messaging flow that tells guests what to do. In the US and Canada, Airbnb can handle the first two natively for Schlage, August and Yale locks.
