Best Airbnb Guest Screening & ID Verification Tools to Automate Check-In

Airbnb already verifies guest identity and screens reservations for party and damage risk, so third-party screening matters most for direct bookings, other channels and managers who want extra checks. Autohost is the most transparent pay-per-check option, Truvi bundles screening with insurance-backed protection, and Safely offers background-check style screening. None eliminates risk.

Key takeaways

  • Airbnb already requires identity verification for booking guests and uses reservation screening that blocks some high-risk bookings, so extra tools mainly help with direct bookings and other channels.
  • Airbnb's Off-Platform policy generally prohibits hosts from asking guests to send government-ID photos before arrival, with narrow legal or compliance exceptions disclosed in the listing.
  • Autohost lists per-check pricing from $0.12 to $7.25 depending on tier; Safely starts at $5 per screening (as of Oct 2026).
  • Screening reduces risk; it does not remove it. Airbnb itself says its checks do not guarantee a person will not break the law.
  • Screening decisions must not discriminate; Airbnb's nondiscrimination policy applies to hosts, and background checks carry their own legal obligations. Talk to a lawyer about your jurisdiction.

Most Airbnb hosts need less third-party screening than vendors suggest, because Airbnb already verifies booking guests' identity and screens reservations for party and damage risk. Extra tools earn their keep for direct bookings, other booking channels and managers who want ID checks, background screening or damage protection on top. Autohost is the most transparent pay-per-check option, Truvi bundles screening with insurance-backed protection, and Safely focuses on background-style checks. None of them eliminates risk. This guide is based on vendor and Airbnb documentation, not hands-on testing, and it is not legal advice. Prices are as of October 2026.

What Airbnb already does

Before paying for anything, know what you get by default.

  • Identity verification. Airbnb says it requires primary hosts, new co-hosts and booking guests to complete identity verification. It checks details such as name, address and phone against trusted third-party sources or a government ID, and may request a selfie to match the ID. Airbnb states the process has safeguards but does not guarantee that someone is who they say they are.
  • Reservation screening. AirCover for Hosts describes proprietary technology that analyses hundreds of factors in each reservation and blocks certain bookings that show a high risk of disruptive parties and property damage. News coverage describes anti-party measures expanding in 2026 and redirecting some higher-risk whole-home bookings to other accommodation.
  • Criminal-record screening. For US users Airbnb uses approved vendors to check court records and sex-offender registries and may restrict accounts. It also states that these efforts have limitations and do not guarantee a person will not break the law.
  • Host protections. AirCover lists up to $3M in host damage protection and $1M in liability insurance. Read the Help Center for exclusions and claim conditions, and treat it as a backstop rather than a substitute for good screening and your own insurance.

What hosts do not get: Airbnb says government ID and selfies submitted to its verification flow are not shared with hosts. Hosts therefore cannot see the ID Airbnb checked.

Where third-party tools make sense

  • Direct bookings. Airbnb's checks do not apply to guests who book on your own website. This is where ID verification and screening add the most.
  • Vrbo, Booking.com and other channels. Each platform has its own checks; a PMS-connected screening tool can apply one standard across channels.
  • Higher-risk properties. Large homes, event-prone locations or high-value contents may justify extra layers.
  • Damage protection and claims. Some vendors offer protection and handle claims, which Airbnb's program does not do the same way.
  • Compliance. Some jurisdictions require guest registration, which Chekin and similar tools handle.

This is the part vendors rarely lead with.

Do not discriminate. Airbnb's nondiscrimination policy requires hosts to treat guests equally regardless of protected characteristics such as race, religion, gender, age (with a limited exception for a minimum booking age of up to 25 for US homes, applied universally), disability, familial status, national origin and sexual orientation. Declining a booking because of a protected characteristic can lead to warnings, listing removal or suspension. Any screening rule you apply should be consistent, based on objective risk factors and the same for every guest. How fair-housing statutes apply to short-term rentals varies, so ask a lawyer.

Background checks are regulated. Safely says it provides risk assessments while following Fair Credit Reporting Act guidelines. In practice, background-check use in the US generally involves consent and specific steps if you decline someone based on a report. We have not verified the requirements for your jurisdiction; check with an attorney or the vendor's compliance documentation.

Collecting IDs has privacy consequences. Airbnb's policy generally prohibits hosts from asking guests to send ID photos in messages before arrival, with exceptions for legal or compliance needs that should be disclosed in the listing. Airbnb places responsibility for data-privacy compliance on the host, and ID images in an email or text thread are a liability. A verification vendor that handles and stores ID data under stated security standards is generally preferable to screenshots in your inbox. Autohost states GDPR, SOC 2 and CCPA compliance; verify any claim you rely on.

Adverse-action steps exist in a related context. The US Federal Trade Commission's guidance for landlords using consumer reports says a landlord must certify a housing-related purpose, give written notice when taking unfavorable action based on a report (including the reporting agency's details and the applicant's right to dispute and to a free report within 60 days), and securely dispose of the report afterwards. That guidance is written for rentals, not short stays, so we cannot say how it applies to a nightly booking; it does show the kind of obligations that can follow when a decision rests on a screening report. Ask a lawyer how your jurisdiction treats short-term guests.

Screening is not a guarantee. Databases are incomplete, fake IDs exist and a clean record is no promise of good behaviour. Treat results as one input.

1. Autohost: best pay-per-check ID verification

Autohost offers ID verification with biometric matching and liveness detection, optional sex-offender and criminal screening, fraud detection and other signals. Its pricing page lists six tiers: Touchless Verification and ID Collection at $0.12 to $0.65 per check, ID Verification at $0.35 to $1.25 (marked most popular), ID plus sex-offender screening at $0.50 to $1.75, ID plus criminal background at $2.15 to $7.25, and a custom suite. Launch and Growth plans add a platform fee. The page is written partly for platforms that resell the service, and a self-serve product called Checktiv offers $5 in free credit and pay-as-you-go pricing. Per a third-party review, results are grouped into low, medium and high risk, with medium and high flagged for review. Integrations listed include Guesty, Hospitable and Hostaway. The vendor's main page also lists optional eviction-history, credit, social-media, global-watchlist, adverse-media and payment-verification checks, custom workflows and property-specific screening rules, and integration by SDK, API, iFrame or hosted page. It states GDPR readiness, SOC 2 Type II and CCPA compliance. Its headline figures about return on investment and fraud reduction are marketing claims we have not verified. Some of these checks, such as credit or eviction history, raise the legal questions above, so use them only after taking advice.

Pros

  • Transparent per-check price ranges
  • Self-serve option for individuals
  • Tiered depth, so you pay for only what you need

Cons

  • Criminal screening brings legal obligations
  • Final decisions on flagged guests remain with you
  • Check host-specific pricing

Ideal portfolio: 1 to 500+ listings.

2. Truvi (formerly Superhog): best screening plus damage protection

Truvi rebranded from Superhog in January 2025. Its model is to screen before arrival, protect during the stay and handle claims afterward, on a pay-per-booking basis. Screening is included, with optional ID verification, sex-offender and criminal checks, and damage protection is customisable up to $1M. Truvi states plainly: "We are not insurance, but we are insurance-backed." It lists integration with 25+ property management systems, including Guesty, Hostaway, Lodgify and Hostfully, and it supports Airbnb bookings through a PMS. Price depends on products and volume; use its calculator. Third-party descriptions cite protection up to $5 million, but Truvi's own page describes customisable coverage of $0 to $1M, so confirm the figure that applies to you.

Pros

  • Screening and protection in one product
  • Dedicated claims handling

Cons

  • Pricing varies and requires a quote or calculator
  • Damage protection has limits and terms to read carefully

Ideal portfolio: 5 to 500+ listings (our read).

3. Safely: best background-check style screening

Safely checks identity against county and court records, national and criminal databases, Europol and Interpol, sex-offender lists, international watchlists and SafelyScore, a proprietary database of guests who caused damage. It says it follows Fair Credit Reporting Act guidelines and leaves accept or deny decisions to you. Screening starts at $5 per screening, or $0.50 per night when bundled with its Protection Policy. It connects to your PMS when a booking arrives; the page did not list the supported systems.

Ideal portfolio: 1 to 100+ listings.

4. Chekin: best for guest registration

Chekin automates online check-in, legal guest registration, deposits, tourist taxes and upsells, with identity verification, self check-in, a branded guest app, digital guidebooks or e-invoicing as optional add-ons. As of October 2026 it lists Basic from EUR 3.95, Premium from EUR 5.95 and Enterprise from EUR 7.95 per property per month, with a minimum subscription of three properties. Its pricing page also lists transaction fees that vary by feature (for example, deposits at 1.5% plus EUR 0.30 and upsells at 10%) and says annual billing can save up to 20%. E-invoicing is listed for Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal. It is more a compliance and check-in tool than a risk-scoring service, so pair it with a screening product if risk scoring is your goal.

5. Enso Connect: verification inside the guest flow

Enso Connect's guest verification confirms identity and collects details before check-in, with ID upload and selfie, signatures and optional payments, each configurable per listing or channel. It integrates third-party verification partners including Truvi, Autohost and Chekin. Its guidance is to release check-in instructions only after verification is complete and to apply stricter verification to high-risk bookings. Official pricing was not published on the pages we reviewed. See also our welcome book comparison.

Worked cost examples (illustrative arithmetic)

These use only the listed ranges above and are not quotes.

  • Twenty direct bookings in a month, ID verification only (Autohost): 20 x $0.35 to $1.25 is about $7 to $25.
  • The same twenty with criminal background screening: 20 x $2.15 to $7.25 is about $43 to $145, before any platform fee.
  • The same twenty on Safely: 20 x $5 is $100 at the starting price. Bundled with its Protection Policy at $0.50 per night, a three-night stay would be $1.50 of protection.
  • Chekin for three properties on Basic: 3 x EUR 3.95 is EUR 11.85 a month, before any transaction fees, with a three-property minimum.

The point is that ID verification is cheap per booking, and the large cost jump comes from criminal-record depth. Whether that depth is lawful or appropriate for your guests is the first question, not the price.

Which hosts need what

  • Airbnb-only, single property: Airbnb's own verification and screening are likely your baseline. Add house rules, occupancy limits and noise monitoring before paying for more.
  • Direct bookings or several channels: add ID verification at the point of booking. Autohost and Enso Connect partners are the verification-focused options; Chekin if local registration is required.
  • Large homes or event-prone areas: consider screening that includes damage protection, such as Truvi, and read its terms and exclusions closely.
  • Managers with owners: owners may expect documented screening. Choose a tool with an audit trail and consistent rules.

Questions to ask a vendor

  1. Which checks run by default, and which are optional and why?
  2. Where is ID data stored, for how long and who can access it?
  3. What consent and notice language does the guest see, and is it adjustable for my jurisdiction?
  4. How are flagged guests handled, and can I override or set my own rules?
  5. Which PMS and channels does it connect to, and does it work with my direct-booking site?
  6. If damage protection is included, what are the limits, exclusions and claim steps?

How to build a sensible screening process

  1. Use Airbnb's checks for Airbnb bookings. Do not duplicate them with ID photos in messages.
  2. Apply tools where Airbnb's checks do not reach. Direct and other-channel bookings first.
  3. Write objective rules. Examples: ID name must match booking name; first-time guest with a same-day booking triggers review. Apply them to everyone.
  4. Decide what happens on a flag. Who reviews it, how fast, and what you do (ask a follow-up, require a deposit, decline).
  5. Disclose requirements. Put verification steps in your listing or direct-booking page so guests know before booking.
  6. Protect the data. Use a vendor with stated security practices and delete ID copies you do not need.
  7. Layer other controls. Occupancy limits, house rules, quiet-hours monitoring and smart-lock timing. See noise monitoring devices and how to automate check-in.

What still requires a human

  • Interpreting medium-risk results and talking to the guest
  • Complying with consent, disclosure and adverse-action rules
  • Handling damage claims with evidence such as before-and-after photos
  • Staying up to date on local registration and privacy rules

Common mistakes

  • Asking for ID photos in messages. It conflicts with Airbnb's policy and creates a privacy risk.
  • Inconsistent decisions. Declining one guest and accepting another with the same flags invites discrimination claims.
  • Treating a pass as a guarantee. Keep house rules, deposits or protection in place.
  • Paying for criminal checks you do not need. Start with ID verification; add depth only where your risk or channel justifies it.
  • Skipping disclosure. Guests should know about verification before they book, not at the door.
  • Keeping ID data forever. Retain only what you need and for as long as your policy and local law require.
  • Forgetting the PMS dependency. Many tools connect through a PMS; if you do not use one, check how the tool takes bookings, and see our PMS roundup.

Frequently asked questions

›Does Airbnb already screen guests?

Yes. Airbnb requires booking guests to complete identity verification, which checks details against trusted sources or a government ID, and its reservation screening analyses many factors to block certain high-risk bookings. Airbnb says these safeguards do not guarantee someone is who they say they are, so they reduce risk without removing it.

›Can I ask Airbnb guests to send me a photo of their ID?

Airbnb's policy generally prohibits hosts from asking guests to send government-ID photos before arrival, with exceptions for legal or compliance requirements such as local registration rules, which the listing should explain. Airbnb's own verification ID is not shared with hosts. Check Airbnb's current policy and local law before collecting any ID.

›Is guest background screening legal?

It depends on the jurisdiction and on how you use the results. Vendors such as Safely say they follow Fair Credit Reporting Act guidelines in the US, which implies consent and adverse-action steps. Fair-housing and Airbnb nondiscrimination rules still apply to how you decide. This is not legal advice; consult an attorney.

›Which tool works with Airbnb bookings?

Most third-party tools connect through a property management system rather than directly to Airbnb, and Truvi describes Airbnb support via a PMS. Autohost lists Guesty, Hospitable and Hostaway integrations. Confirm that your PMS is supported before buying.

›Will screening stop parties?

It can flag risk, but it cannot guarantee behaviour. Parties are better addressed with clear house rules, occupancy limits, noise monitoring and Airbnb's own anti-party measures, with screening as one layer. See our noise monitoring guide for the device side.
